Photokina 2014

17th September 2014
Well, I made my rapid visit to this year's Photokina in Cologne. Travelled by train this time and I would certainly repeat this in 2016, much less hassle than air travel, even allowing for the airport style security at either end of the Eurostar section of the trip. Wish we were Schengen integrated!
So Tuesday morning saw me heading for the show and joining the scrum of people wanting to make an early entry. My time was limited as I had to catch a train back to London via Brussells in the late afternoon. I did however manage to see most of the Leica exhibits as well as Artisan & Artist, Fotospeed, and a quick look at Zeiss. Missed out Voigtlander regrettably.
Bumped into quite a few people that I know to varying degrees: Mike Evans (Macfilos), Andreas Juergensen of the L-camera-forum, Ferdi a member of the Forum whom I have kmown on and off since 2009, and not least Jon Sareen of Leica UK. I had a good chat with Jason Heward also of Leica UK in "The Leica Room" as I had set this meeting up a week or so ago, and I met Rachel and Colin also of Leica UK.
So what did I find intriguing from my point of view?
One of my prime objectives was to see and handle the two upcoming T zoom lenses: 11-23mm and 55-135mm, completing a trio of zooms from 11mm to 135mm (16mm - 200mm equivalent). I was impressed by both of these but more so by the wide zoom which willdefinitely make its way inot the collection when it eventually creeps its way to sale (January!).
What did surprise me was the X (Type 113) with the new f1.7 23mm lens, This lens does not extend on switch-on and is of course 1.5 stops faster than the X2. I think this will be joining the stable!
That is unless I go for the D-Lux instead! This little wonder has a larger full 4/3 sensor (not micro 4/3), a built-in EVF, and it comes with a detachable small flash unit. Slightly more restgricted zoom range though (24mm-75mm)with an f1.4 max.aperture. Very impressive little camera.
By now of course you will all have seen the entire shebang - the lovely range of gadget bags, the new Summarits also in silver, the M60, the M-A the new S with CMOS sensor.
I will have a few images up om the site very soon for droolinmg purposes!
Now we just have to work out where to put all the new stock in the shop!
